When it comes to home decor, curtains often play a pivotal role in creating the ambiance of a room. They aren’t just style accessories; they serve a purpose beyond aesthetics like keeping in the heat during winter, or keeping the sun to a minimum in summer.

However, selecting the perfect curtains can be a daunting task, especially with the myriad of options available in the market.

Our years of experience in curtain design and making has given us a wealth of knowledge about the do’s and don’ts when it comes to choosing and hanging curtains. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution to selecting the right curtains, there are some key aspects to keep in mind so you can make the right choice for your individual situation.

Let’s look into some common curtain hanging mistakes we’ve seen over the years, and explore how you can avoid them to ensure your curtains have the best possible impact in your space:

1. Hanging them at the wrong height:

One of the most common mistakes people make when hanging curtains is placing them too low.

Simply plonking your curtains onto the window frame can visually shorten the height of the window and the room as a whole.

Instead, aim to hang the curtain rod approximately 10-15cm above the window frame. If you have higher ceilings consider floor-to-ceiling curtains for a more grandiose look.

2. Too short a length:

Opting for curtains that are too short not only looks awkward but also compromises their functionality, particularly in terms of heat retention.

Consider options such as:

  • floating curtains, which have a slight gap from the floor,
  • pooling curtains where the fabric elegantly cascades onto the floor.

3. Not wide enough:

Curtains should completely cover the window frame and then some, especially in rooms where light-blocking is desired.

Ensure that your curtain rod or track extends beyond the sides of the window frame where possible to allow the curtains to partially obscure the wall. Aim for approximately 25cm – 30cm of coverage on either side for optimal coverage.

4. Lacking fullness:

Sparse curtains not only look unappealing but also lack the gracefulness of their fuller counterparts.

To achieve a full, luxurious look, curtains require ample fabric, typically twice or even three times the width of the curtain rod.
